It is more then just wiggling your hips!

NEW HOOPS!

It has been a long time coming but success has been achieved. Last year some pipping was donated to Fire Club and we planned to make some new hula hoops as, lets be frank, our current ones were in tatters and in no shape to teach newbies or even further develop existing skills :S
Almost a year later our brilliant SUZI and KM got out the power tools and rolled up their sleeves.  

Even  though she has a broken thumb this lady still know how to make a great hoop!

Not sure what to call this tool but it makes me feel powerful and skilled :D

I would likely avoid her... haha game face is on!

The product!

In total we constructed five hoops, two 34 inch two 36 inch and one large one for our taller members and to learn new tricks- the bigger the hoop the slower it moves. It is such a lovely change to have hoops that are hoop able! From here wellllll... I think its time for a hoop workshop and make good use of these new toys.

Does any one have requests for colours as they are yet to be tapped.

Road trip to Whanganui.

Yesterday a group of us performed over in Whanganui to do a roaming and fire performance for the Artists Open Studios festival. The event is a large arts trail down the main street of the town and will be happening all week (21st - 29th March). There are with a load of interesting artistic exhibitions from glass to photography, sculpture to painting. Check it out if your in the area.

The Great Fire Club Show Case 2015

So last week we had our showcase and I must say we have some talent in the house!

From silks, to juggling, fire double staff to fire poi, lyra to trick hooping, diablo to contortion, fire fans and of course the fire eating and fire breathing!

Not everyone could make it and hence this blog is all about it.

First up we had an indoor non fire show which ran incredibly smoothly, minus one performer's music going missing... but we solved that hiccup wayyy before it became a problem.... (about two minutes before she was to perform hahaah).

I would also just like to make a special congratulations to Nicole our contortionist. This was her first on stage performance and she totally rocked it! Keep it up!

For our outdoor half we had some impressive fire acts but pictures always explain it better then words.

The 2015 SHOW CASE

Our members have put moves to music to encourage new members, to test our skills and have some fun!.This year will be our second Showcase, aiming to be bigger and brighter then the first. Come see trick hooping, staff routines, contortion and the aerial lyra to name but a few of the acts for the night.

If you want to see what we like to do in our spare time, pick up a new toy move or skill yourself or even just come for free biscuits pop on down on March the 3rd! Performances kick of at 7:40pm.

Kiwiburn 2015 part two.
I have stumbled across some of Carolyn's photos and have permission to use them so here is more insight as to what Kiwiburn WRYD 2015 contained.

A Post about a Paddock

As the title indicates this is indeed a post about a paddock but not just any kind of paddock and not just any kind of post.

This is a post about KIWIBURN WYRD 2015!
Which was indeed held in a paddock in the middle of nowhere. 

The 12th Kiwiburn festival in New Zealand was held on Wednesday the 21st of January to Monday the 26th of January and it was one i'm sure no participant will forget!
If you have never heard of Kiwiburn before it is an annual festival held in New Zealand derived in part from the Burning Man festival held in Nevada. the Festival brings people together to celebrate colour, music, fire arts, spirituality, culture, self expression, and community. The festival tests your survival skills as you must bring everything you will need with you, including water, food, and infinite smiles. Bartering and gift giving is encouraged but no money exchanges hands through out the festival unless it is of course to purchase ice at the deport to help survive the 30'C weather. The Kiwiburn website has all the detailed information you could ever need about the festival which you can click this link here ------> http://kiwiburn.com/ 
However this post is to share some of the experiences of our members and their photos for everyone to enjoy!

Every year on the Saturday night we have the Burning Man! But this year it was a Burning WOMAN! A beautiful sculpture made mostly of pallets and bamboo, was a landmark and the star of hundreds of photos for Kiwiburn 2015.
When the woman is burnt everyone cheers and dances around the burning effigy. A celebration of everything.

From behind you could climb a ladder into the woman's head and see through her eyes.
A common joke throughout the festival was how amazed many men must have been at the ability  to get inside a woman's head

The other main event of the festival which occures every year is on the Sunday, the burn of the Temple. Designed by Rohana Weaver this year the Temple was a very spiritual place of letting go, moving forward, finding balance, unity and interwoven nature of life.

People were encouraged to write messages on the walls of the Temple before the night of the burn.

All the flags made a surprisingly loud noise, rustling in the wind. 

The night of the Temple Burn is spiritual, quite emotion event done in silence. It effects everyone differently but the beauty of Kiwiburn is the community and support given to everyone. This year due to wind and location we had some tents attacked with a hose from the fire engine to ensure we did not have burning tents alongside the burning temple.

A photo can never truly explain the beauty of such a moment.

As it went down so well last year we brought it back for 2015..... BUCKET COUSCOUS 

No one was left hungry that night!

And this must be mentioned! A portable DJ and Bar towed by a fire engine! yes you got that right guys! A fire engine travelling the paddock to provide festivity in the form of beer music and dance!

Party time? Always!

Pimp my ride? 

Alternative healing was present in the paddock, along side a first aid tent. But this portable healing booth went go down as a favourite, SLAP CITY HEALING. How does it work you may ask? Take a mysterious shot to cure your ailment immediately followed by a good slap to the face to ensure it is chased out of the body, followed by a bear hug to top it off.

Tribute

So another fantastic year is over and some fair wells have been said. However despite leaving town and even some leaving the country they cannot get rid of us that easily! 

First off we have a couple of Canadians  to acknowledge who lit up Kiwi burn 2013!
Karrie and Tyler!
I must say they are my favourite Canadians yet ;) but have unfortunately left us to return to Canada. They were here for a good time not a long time, yet they definitely left their mark! Karrie and Tyler were both talented members of the Club, joining up to do a fire performance consisting of mini hoops (Karrie) and poi (Tyler) for our Show Case of 2014, really making an impression on our newbies! Karrie also partnered with our Secretary Katheryn Margaret (KM) to do a full sized hoop performance for Unity and Diversity of 2014.
So as a small tribute to the two of them here are a few pics :P

Next person that must be mentioned is our Patron Lynelle who has been around for as long as anyone can remember! not due to lack of love for us but due to bigger brighter horizons she has moved towns. Known for her outstandingly good deep throat fire eating, poi and levee stick, to name only a few, her skills will be missed but we will continue to drag her back to events no doubt.

Lastly Nicky! She is leaving us with all her beautiful hoops and hip movements due to job opportunities out of the town. Starting off with poi her passion for hooping soon developed and her continuously changing hair will be missed.
